Who We Are
Americans for Ibogaine (AFI) is dedicated to advancing understanding and responsible medical access to ibogaine therapy for individuals struggling with addiction, trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions.
We bring together clinicians, researchers, veterans, first-responders, policymakers, and advocates united by a shared conviction: that every American deserves access to the most promising evidence-based treatments available—including ibogaine.
Founded to address the growing disconnect between emerging ibogaine research and U.S. regulatory policy, AFI serves as a credible, nonpartisan bridge between the scientific community, Congress, state legislatures, and the public.
Our Mission
Our mission is to advance public understanding and responsible medical access to ibogaine for addiction, trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions through:
Science-based Education
Translating clinical research into accessible information for policymakers, media, and the public.
Research Support
Advocating for expanded clinical trials and FDA-pathway research.
Policy Engagement
Working with state and federal legislators to create frameworks for safe, legal, medically supervised ibogaine therapy.
Community Partnerships
Collaborating with other non-profit organizations, research institutions, and healthcare providers.
Stigma Reduction
Countering misinformation with evidence and lived experience.
What We Do &
What We Don’t
This distinction matters. Our commitment to the FDA approval pathway (rather than decriminalization) reflects our belief that safe, regulated, medically supervised access is the only responsible path forward.
We do:
- Educate the public, media, and policymakers about ibogaine research
- Support legislation focused on medical use through FDA approval pathways
- Connect journalists, researchers, and advocates with credible information
- Partner with veteran service organizations and treatment research initiatives
- Maintain strict ethical standards for storytelling and engagement
We do not:
- Operate treatment clinics or provide medical advice
- Endorse or promote specific ibogaine treatment providers
- Provide financial assistance for treatment
- Support recreational use, decriminalization, or broad legalization
Our Approach
AFI pursues its mission through strategic outreach across four pillars:
Education
We produce and distribute research-backed educational content for diverse audiences — from congressional briefing materials to public-facing media that makes complex science accessible.
Advocacy
We work directly with state legislatures and federal policymakers to advance responsible ibogaine legislation, testifying before committees and providing expert resources.
Coalition-Building
We convene stakeholders across medicine, policy, military service, and lived experience to build the broad-based support necessary for systemic change.
Research Acceleration
We advocate for clinical trial funding, connect researchers with resources, and champion the rigorous study ibogaine needs to achieve FDA approval.
